The Glory of God – Another Look

When you try to visualize the glory of God, what is the picture that comes into your mind?  Do you think of something ethereal, shining, wispy, a cloud, a radiance, something emanating from God and falling upon mankind?   I would not disagree.  In fact we have Biblical references to all these aspects of God’s glory.

But it is said that Saint Irenaeus, who lived in the second century AD, coined this phrase, “The glory of God is man fully alive.”  Actually his quote in Latin is, “Gloria Dei est vivens homo”, which literally means, “The glory of God is living man.”  Could this be scripturally sound?  Could it be that the glory of God isn’t only something that emanates from God but is also something finite and physical… could His glory be – a human?

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him – Gen 1:27

A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God…  – I Cor 11:17

Did you catch that?  Man is the image and glory of God!  How spectacular!  Not only does God give glory, like we agreed at thThe Mts shall break forth before you!e beginning, but the glory of God is a thing… a man… a living breathing human being.

What if God’s perspective of man is that we are the pinnacle of His creation… we’re the epitome of His highest intentions… and if you ever wondered what God considers glorious, He would say, “Look at man.”

Are we okay with that?  Can we really ‘wear’ this honor and distinction without flinching?  But I imagine that right about now a thought is going through our minds, like 1) “I’m not good enough for that”… or 2) “Isn’t that somehow diminishing God by bringing Him down to the level of man?”

Great questions.  Wonder what God thinks about that?  Consider these passages:

… as He is, so also are we in this world. – I John 4:17

 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son – Roms 8:29

 And we all, who with unveiled faces contemplate the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory – II Cor 3:18

When(ever – author) Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. – Col 3:4

Hmmm!  Evidently this idea of being like God, is not an errant rogue thought.  And No, He’s not jeopardizing His God-ly-ness to make us like Him.  Looks like God is trying to get us to believe that He’s conforming us to Himself.  

Could it be possible that we’re the focal point and object of all of His affections… we are plan A, His first choice and His highest intentions in all of history.  We’re so valued, loved and esteemed that He sent His only begotten son Jesus, to be murdered on a humiliating and torturous tree so that we would really believe His good intentions for us.

Side note: Do we realize that the value of a thing is determined by what someone will pay for it?  So do you get this?… Since Jesus paid His life for you, then you are worth the same value as Jesus!

Wow!  This is heady stuff.  I think our God REALLY wants us to get this!!!   Listen to Jesus’ passionate longing and private dialog He had with His Father about you and me in John 17:21-24

21 that they may all be one; even as (in the same way – author) You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be IN Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.

22“The glory which You have given Me I have given to them, that they may be one (with us – author), just as We are one; 23 I in them and You in Me, that they may be perfected in unity (with us – author), so that the world may know that You sent Me, and loved them, even as You have loved Me. 24“Father, I desire that they also, whom You have given Me, be with Me where I am, so that they may see (comprehend and receive – author) My glory which You have given Me, for You loved Me before the foundation of the world.

Can you hear the deepest longings of a “love that surpasses knowledge” (Eph 3:19)?  How is it that the Supreme Being of all the universe is so taken with us.  So taken the He gives us the same glory that He has.  He wants us to be “perfectly unified” with Him and the Father in every way… and to be with Him right where He is.

O thank Heavens!  We’re getting new eyes!  We’re being transformed by the renewing of our minds into understanding that we are “his holy people who are his rich and glorious inheritance (Eph 1:18b).  Yes, we read it correctly.  We are Jesus’ RICH AND GLORIOUS INHERITANCE.  Woweee!  The Prince of Peace, the King of all Kings, The Lord of all Lords get us as His inheritance.  We must really be  s-o-m-e-b-o-d-y!!!

Let’s explore this a bit further in Eph 3:17-19

17 so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

Let’s see if I’m getting this right!  If we get rooted and established in love… then we can grasp the magnitude of God’s love… that goes beyond the capabilities of human reason… so that we could begin to believe that we are filled with all the fullness of God.  Wait A Minute!  Did it say, ALL THE FULLNESS OF GOD?!?!  Now, that really stretches my believe-er.  Am I supposed to believe that God is talking about me?

Well, I guess it boils down to this; either God’s a liar… and I don’t think that’s possible… or I’m a different species than ‘somebody’ has led me to believe.  

Let’s try it from another angle.

Remember this verse; “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers” (II Cor 6:14)?  We wisely use this admonition to counsel believers not to marry unbelievers… right?  Well, consider this: If God holds this standard out for us, then in order to be in keeping with His own nature, He would have to abide by the same standard when it comes to marrying His Son Jesus to us, His bride.  In other words, in order to be married to Jesus you must be equal to Jesus!!  Now come on, before we have a knee jerk reaction to this stupendous concept, let’s just ask ourselves if God’s Word is true.  Did you come up with an answer?  Lock it in.  Okay, I think we’re getting it, now.  If you’re married to Jesus then you are His equal. 

So, could it be that all we have to do is believe what He says about us for us to be equally yoked/married to Jesus?  That sounds too easy.  All I have to do is de-activate my doubt-er and activate my believe-er.

Well, let’s try one more point and wrap this up by returning to our original subject of man being the glory of God.  

What if these are God’s intentions; that we fully comprehend His love for us… so that we get transformed by our minds being made new… until we’re as He is in this world… filled with all the fullness of God… and are conformed into His image… with ever increasing glory on us… until we’re actually the re-presentation of the glory of Jesus on the earth?  What if we truly begin to believe in our righteousness that is of Jesus, until we can say along with Jesus, and with full conviction, “If you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father.” (Jn 14:9)  ( eh-hem… just clearing my throat)  Okay, let’s move on…

 Assuming that we’re on track so far, then what does the following verse mean, now.

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.  – Hab 2:14

Oh, oh!  I think we’re getting it.  

God’s intends to fill the earth with believe-ers who are fully convinced of the knowledge that they are the glory of God.  The ‘glory of the Lord’ message and the ‘glory-fied’ believers become so prolific that the whole earth is filled with the glory of God.  This planet gets covered as the waters cover the sea with the walking, talking, breathing glory of God – man.  Every eye sees a real re-presentation of Jesus, because we’re walking in the reality of, “we are as He is in this world”.

So as soon as we get this, here’s our blue print prophecy.  

1 Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord rises upon you.  2 See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and his glory appears over you.  9186569-a-joyous-man-with-arms-stretched-up-to-a-glorious-sky3 Nations will come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your dawn (of a new day – author). – Isa 60:1-3

Saints… sons and daughters of God… the bride of Christ… it’s time to believe that we are, who we really are.  Old and lesser mindsets have grown worse than stuffy and stale… we’ve determined that they’re our enemy and they intend to rob us of our status and inheritance.  We’re taking those thieving thoughts captive, because we’re at the dawn of a new day… and living in today will require that our believe-er gets a serious upgrade.  So, we determine to believe radically upgraded new thoughts… because “as a man thinks (believes – author) in his heart so is he” (Prov 23:7).

Okay, are we ready to be transformed?  Concentrate now… swallow hard… and repeat this ten times, “By the grace of God, I am the glory of God.”

      Your right Sam, it is so good. As our minds are getting renewed, we are getting transformed into the reflection that we see in the ‘mirror’ of the Word. – James 1:23-25 A whole new breed of saints…
